Vinicio Capossela, one of Italy’s most celebrated and best-selling artists, has released his latest album, The Story-Faced Man, now available digitally in North America through the Nonesuch Store. In the UK, where the album was released late last month, The Independent recognizes the similarities to American icon Tom Waits (whose frequent collaborator Marc Ribot performs on the album), yet insists that both Capossela's "unhinged Dadaist rockers and his delicate piano ballads show him to be an exceptional songwriter in his own right."

For the first time, this 17-track compendium offers audiences in North America an introduction to the music of the man described by the Sunday Times as "Italy’s greatest rock star" and by Mojo as "Italy’s most intriguing musical traveler." Capossela has navigated a inimitable musical path to consistent acclaim during his 20-year career, drawing on a diverse range of influences, from Italian folk to Americana and burlesque. The album is available as audiophile-quality (320 kbps) MP3s, featuring the bonus track "All'una e trentacinque circa," exclusively in the Nonesuch Store.

Renowned for his enchanting concerts that fuse rock, theatre, and performance art, Capossela recently performed two sets at London's Union Chapel and is now bringing the show to North America. He begins a week-long tour through the US and Canada with two nights at New York's (Le) Poisson Rouge (for which guitarist Ribot and multi-instrumentalist Frank London join him), followed by shows in Montreal, Toronto, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Below are the scheduled dates, with more information available at nonesuch.com/on-tour:

Mar 5 (Le) Poisson Rouge New York, NY
Mar 6 (Le) Poisson Rouge New York, NY
Mar 8 L'Astral Montreal, QC, CANADA
Mar 9 The Mod Club Toronto, ON, CANADA
Mar 10 Lakeshore Theater Chicago, IL
Mar 12 Bimbo's 365 Club San Francisco, CA
Mar 13 El Rey Theatre Los Angeles, CA

Born in 1965, Capossela released his debut album, All’una e trentacinque circa, in 1990, which earned him Italy’s prestigious Tenco award. To date he has released 11 albums, including Il ballo di San Vito (1996), which began his continuing collaboration with guitarist Marc Ribot, the Tenco award-winning Canzoni a manovella (2000), Ovunque Proteggi (2006), which debuted at No. 1 on the Italian charts and won him another Tenco, and the platinum-certified Da Solo (2008). Caposella’s last three releases have all been included in Mojo’s albums of the year round-ups. In 2004, he published his first novel, the best-seller Non si muore tutte le mattine, and in 2009 he scripted the film La faccia della terra, which was directed by Gianfranco Firriolo and premiered at the Milan Film Festival.

Brad Mehldau’s After Bach II and Après Fauré are out now on Nonesuch Records. The Bach album comprises four preludes and one fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as the Allemande from the fourth Partita, interspersed with seven compositions or improvisations by Mehldau inspired by the complementary works of Bach—including Mehldau’s Variations on Bach’s Goldberg Theme. On Après Fauré, Mehldau performs four nocturnes, from a thirty-seven-year span of Gabriel Fauré’s career, as well as a reduction of an excerpt from the Adagio movement of his Piano Quartet in G Minor. Here Mehldau’s four compositions that Fauré inspired are presented in a group, bookended by two sections featuring the French composer’s works.

DAVÓNE TINES & THE TRUTH’s “LET IT SHINE” is the first song from their new work ROBESOИ. In ROBESOИ, which premieres June 27 (preview June 26) at NYC’s Little Island, Davóne Tines grapples with the legacy of a hero. Exploding the musical repertoire of Paul Robeson, Tines and his band THE TRUTH take us on a trip from the stage of Carnegie Hall to the floor of a Moscow hotel room, in an attempt to understand an icon not through aspiring to his monumentality, but through connecting to his vulnerability. The members of THE TRUTH are pianist John Bitoy and sound artist Khari Lucas. Details of the forthcoming ROBESOИ album, Tines’ solo recording debut, will be announced soon.
