Congratulations to all of the Nonesuch Records artists who were nominated for the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, announced earlier today by The Recording Academy: Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Rhiannon Giddens, Caetano Veloso & Gilberto Gil, and John Adams. Together, these artists' Nonesuch releases have garnered a total of six nominations this year.

Brad Mehldau has been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Improvised Jazz Solo for his take on the Cole Porter tune "I Concentrate on You," from the new Brad Mehldau Trio album, Blues and Ballads. The album comprises interpretations of songs by other composers, with the focus on blues and ballads implied by the album’s title, also including works by Charlie Parker, Lennon & McCartney, and Jon Brion. "A spellbinding set whose salient features are subtlety and understatement," Mojo exclaims. "Sublime stuff." The Times of London says it's "sublimely satisfying." The New York Times calls it "beautiful."

Mehldau has also been nominated with label mate and longtime friend and collaborator Joshua Redman for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Instrumental Album for their debut duo album, Nearness. "The pair are so well matched," says BBC Music Magazine. "Both are extraordinary, scintillating improvisers bursting with energy, yet they have great ears for one another." Mojo says: "They create a special telepathic musical synergy in each other’s company."

Rhiannon Giddens has been nominated for two Grammy Awards for Factory Girl: Best American Roots Performance on the title track and Best Folk Album on the EP itself. Recorded during the T Bone Burnett–produced sessions for Rhiannon Giddens's highly acclaimed solo debut, Tomorrow Is My Turn, Factory Girl includes songs written or made famous by musical heroes Ethel Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharp; a song co-written by Giddens; a traditional Gaelic mouth music tune; and the title track, a traditional Irish song for which Giddens wrote additional lyrics. "It's a clutch of tunes that work together like the cards in a winning poker hand," says the New York Times. "Her accompaniment … points to an ageless gold standard for American roots music." "Deftly curated, gorgeously sung," says NPR, "this EP is America."

Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil have been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for their album Dois Amigos, Um Século de Música: Multishow Live. This live two-disc recording documents a historic reunion from the legendary Brazilian musicians. Recorded during a concert in Brazil in 2015, it celebrates a lifelong friendship over the half-century careers of two artists who have broken cultural, social, and political barriers through music. The Guardian says: "They are now in their early 70s, and they are still remarkable." Jazzwise calls it "a glorious celebration of Brazilian music, the art of the singer-songwriter, and an enduring friendship." NPR says: "It's almost startling to encounter music like this—refined to an essence, simple, graceful and complete."

Violinist Leila Josefowicz has been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo for her performance on John Adams's Scheherazade.2, a piece written for her. Adams's "cinematic music goes a long way in unfolding a potent drama, masterfully illuminated by conductor David Robertson and the St. Louis Symphony," says NPR. "The fierceness and vulnerability Leila Josefowicz expresses contributes to an award-caliber performance." Scheherazade.2 "sets a whole new standard for narrative and theatrical vibrancy," exclaims the San Francisco Chronicle.

The 59th Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on CBS. For more information, including a complete list of nominees, visit grammy.com.

Brad Mehldau’s After Bach II and Après Fauré are out now on Nonesuch Records. The Bach album comprises four preludes and one fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, as well as the Allemande from the fourth Partita, interspersed with seven compositions or improvisations by Mehldau inspired by the complementary works of Bach—including Mehldau’s Variations on Bach’s Goldberg Theme. On Après Fauré, Mehldau performs four nocturnes, from a thirty-seven-year span of Gabriel Fauré’s career, as well as a reduction of an excerpt from the Adagio movement of his Piano Quartet in G Minor. Here Mehldau’s four compositions that Fauré inspired are presented in a group, bookended by two sections featuring the French composer’s works.
