Paul Thomas Anderson was on NPR's Fresh Air to discuss his new film, Phantom Thread, including Jonny Greenwood's score, which is "great," says host Terry Gross. The music "is so good," she tells Anderson. "There's something so operatic about the movie because there's underscoring throughout almost the entire film. So there's almost always music playing. And it's often not playing quietly in the background. It's pretty upfront much of the time."

Filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson, whose new feature film, Phantom Thread, has just been nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, was the guest on NPR's Fresh Air, which you can hear below. He spoke with host Terry Gross about the new film, which is set in the glamour of 1950s London and stars Daniel Day-Lewis renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock, Lesley Manville as his sister Cyril, and Vicky Krieps, as Alma, a young, strong-willed woman, who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover.

"His new film, Phantom Thread, has a great score," Terry Gross says in her introduction, "and that's nominated for an Oscar too." The score, written by Jonny Greenwood, is also a topic of conversation in their interview.

"So I want to ask you about the music in your movie, which is so good," says Gross. "There's something so operatic about the movie because there's underscoring throughout almost the entire film. So there's almost always music playing. And it's often not playing quietly in the background. It's pretty upfront much of the time."

Anderson talks about working with Greenwood on the new film, a collaboration that follows their having previously worked together on There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice, as well as Junun, which Anderson documented on film.

The Phantom Thread soundtrack is now available digitally via Nonesuch Records, with the CD to follow February 9 and the vinyl LP April 21. To download the soundtrack now, visit iTunes, Amazon, and the Nonesuch Store, where the CD and vinyl may also be pre-ordered; the album can be heard on Spotify and Apple Music as well.
