Congratulations to Julia Bullock, who has won the Edison Klassiek Award in the Netherlands for Solo Vocalist for her debut solo album, Walking in the Dark, released late last year on Nonesuch Records.

Julia Bullock, who won Breakout Artist of the Year in Germany’s Opus Klassik Awards for Walking in the Dark in June, is joined by London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Christian Reif, to perform Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and a song from John Adams’s El Niño on the album. She is joined by Reif, on piano, for a traditional spiritual and songs by Oscar Brown, Jr., Billy Taylor, Sandy Denny, and Connie Converse. Bullock is “one of the singular artists of her generation,” says the New York Times, “a singer of enveloping tone, startlingly mature presence and unusually sophisticated insight into culture, society and history.” You can hear the album and get it here.

Bullock, performed two recitals at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City this week, will be in the Netherlands to perform in the world premiere of Ellen Reid's The Shell Trial with the Dutch National Opera in March. Her 2023–24 schedule also features the European premiere of John Adams's Antony & Cleopatra in Spain in October; Adams's El Niño at The Metropolitan Opera in New York next spring; her adaptation of the piece throughout the US this fall; dates with Philharmonia Orchestra in the UK in November; and several recitals, including at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall in January. The original cast album of Adam Guettel’s Broadway musical Days of Wine and Roses, with a book by Craig Lucas, starring Kelli O’Hara and Brian d’Arcy James, is now available on CD, following its recent digital release. “Repeated listenings compound the amazement,” the New York Times says of Guettel’s work, which “has always offered that kind of challenge—initially leaving a feeling of: Beautiful, but wait, I need to hear it again—and those up for it have a way of coming away shining like Moses down from the Mount. The new score has the same effect.” Guettel, O'Hara, and d'Arcy James—all of whom have been nominated for Tony Awards for Days of Wine and Roses—will sign copies of the CD at the Drama Book Shop in NYC this Wednesday, May 22.
