While that can make for a less than ideal shopping experience, indie record stores across the country have gotten together to help keep up the holiday cheer with Record Store Day Black Friday, offering unique recordings from some of your favorite artists, including The Arcs and Rhiannon Giddens.
The Arcs—Dan Auerbach, Leon Michels, Richard Swift, Homer Steinweiss and Nick Movshon—are on board this year with The Arcs vs. The Inventors Vol. I, a new limited-edition 10" six-song recording featuring Dr. John and David Hidalgo. The disc is the first in a series of collaborative "Inventors" recordings to be released by The Arcs. "Sometimes the best way to see into the future is to study the past," says the band's Dan Auerbach. "In this series we do both, collaborating with folks who have been in the game a long time but instead of rehashing old material, we collaborate on new works, explore new ideas and introduce each other to a different generational perspective." "Young," a track off the recording, premiered on the Record Store Day website earlier this week; it can be heard here. The band kicks off its North American tour this Tuesday, December 1.
Rhiannon Giddens participates in today's events with the release of Factory Girl, a five-song vinyl 10" EP culled from the same T Bone Burnett–produced sessions that yielded here solo debut album, Tomorrow Is My Turn. The EP includes songs written or made famous by musical heroes Ethel Waters and Sister Rosetta Tharp; a song co-written by Giddens; a traditional Gaelic mouth music tune; and the title track, a traditional Irish song for which she wrote additional lyrics. Giddens begins her European and UK tour in early 2016, including several as part of Transatlantic Sessions.
